Letting Go of the Need to Always Be Right: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Before I relocated to Seattle, my “know-it-all” persona was seen as endearing — a quirk that defined me. However, in the bustling city, my constant insistence on being right began to strain my relationships. I realized that my obsession with correctness was affecting my connections more than I had imagined.

Recognizing the impact of my behavior, I made a conscious effort to change. I started practicing active listening, giving others space to express their thoughts without immediately countering. I learned to be patient and understanding, even when I strongly disagreed.

It wasn’t easy to break my old habits, as I had long believed that being right equated to intelligence. But this conversation with a friend challenged that perspective and made me realize that there was more to intellect and competence than just correctness.

Working towards change, I admitted to having a problem and took small steps to improve. I focused on active listening, staying present in conversations, and practicing empathy. These changes significantly improved my relationships and made discussions more fulfilling.

Through my journey, I discovered some valuable life lessons. Taking responsibility for my actions empowered me to make necessary changes. I also realized that many of my behaviors were influenced by societal expectations, and questioning them allowed me to live more authentically.

Here are key takeaways from my journey:

  • Taking responsibility for your actions increases personal power and enables change.
  • Questioning societal expectations leads to personal growth.
  • Practicing empathy and active listening improves relationships.
  • Being right does not define intelligence or competence.
  • Mindfulness helps in staying present during conversations.

This ongoing journey of self-discovery has reshaped my reality, and I encourage you to embrace your own journey. Change is challenging, but it brings rewards. Allow yourself to learn and grow from your experiences.
