Verdict: Toyota GR Yaris is Now Even More Desirable

Toyota has addressed customer concerns with the GR Yaris by improving the driving position and introducing new features. The result is a more appealing and desirable driver’s car.

While the Toyota GR Yaris is a brilliant car, there were certain aspects that could have been better executed, particularly the driving position which many found to be too high. However, Toyota has listened to feedback and made significant changes in the new version of the car.

One of the most noticeable improvements is the lower driving position, achieved by modifying the floorpan and revising the steering column and wheel. Additionally, the interior mirror has been raised and a new bespoke dashboard has been added. These changes have transformed the car even before it hits the road.

But that’s not all. The car’s power has been increased from 257bhp to 276bhp, and the manual gearbox has been refined for smoother shifting. An eight-speed automatic transmission option is also now available, which Toyota claims is fast-shifting and low maintenance, making it suitable for endurance driving.

In terms of the car’s design, the base model has been discontinued and the range now consists of a sole Circuit Pack car. This version comes with a full-spec drivetrain, Torsen locking differentials, a new multi-function digital instrument pack, and a three-stage drive-mode switch. The four-wheel drive system has also been tweaked for better performance.

Early prototypes of the car were tested at the Jarama race track in Spain, and the improvements were immediately noticeable. The car felt better, with a sweeter manual shift and improved suspension that resulted in a lower-slung feel and reduced roll. The car now handles corners with even more precision and power.

The all-wheel drive system has been adapted for adaptable torque split, allowing the new Yaris to maintain great grip in corners without scrubbing the tires. The driving position, dynamic poise, and balance have all been significantly improved.

The automatic gearbox also impressed with its speed and gear selection, but the true test will be on UK roads with a production-ready car. No pricing has been announced yet, but sales are expected to begin in June.
