Gremlins Dominate Jets in Girls Basketball Showdown
The Houghton Gremlins girls basketball team secured a convincing 56-26 victory over the Jeffers Jets in a game that showcased the diverging paths of both teams. While the Gremlins continue to move forward with their impressive season, the Jets faced difficulty following a recent loss to Ewen-Trout Creek.
Gremlins’ Defensive Success Overcomes Offensive Challenges
The Gremlins acknowledged on offense that they were not as sharp as desired, but they prioritized their defensive goals and succeeded in meeting them. Coach Julie Filpus praised her team’s defensive efforts, stating that their ability to rise to the challenge compensated for any offensive shortcomings.
Jets Show Improvement after Struggling in First Half
The game proved to be a tale of two halves for the Jets. The first half was particularly difficult, with only nine points scored and a lack of successful field goals. However, the team responded positively in the second half, with improved offensive performance and a stronger overall showing. Coach Chad Larson recognized their improved efforts and expressed confidence that their offensive struggles would be resolved with time.
Danica Ryynanen’s Stellar Performance for the Gremlins
Senior Danica Ryynanen set the tone for the Gremlins with a strong start, showcasing her skills on both ends of the court. With multiple steals leading to layups, Ryynanen finished with a game-high 16 points. Her senior leadership and attention to detail on defense impressed Coach Filpus and contributed to the team’s success.
Balance Key to Houghton’s Offense
The Gremlins displayed a balanced scoring effort, with multiple players contributing to their offensive output. In addition to Ryynanen’s performance, senior Clea Ollanketo scored 10 points, while freshman Ellie Hainault and junior Eva Gerard each added eight. Coach Filpus emphasized the importance of having multiple scoring options to keep the defense on its toes and create more scoring opportunities.
Jets’ Second Half Encourages Coach Larson
While the Jets did not come out victorious, their improved showing in the second half provided encouragement for Coach Larson. With senior Sara Johnson hindered by injury, it was sophomore Mia Nordstrom who stepped up, tallying nine points and displaying determination. Coach Larson believes this performance will boost the team’s confidence and hopes to carry the momentum into future games.
Looking Ahead
The Houghton Gremlins will have a brief break until their matchup against Kingsford on Friday, while the Jets are set to face Wakefield-Marenisco on Thursday. Both teams are focused on continued growth and improvement as they progress through the season.
