Looking Ahead: JMU Lacrosse Aims for AAC Title and NCAA Tournament Run in 2024

Following a successful 2023 season where they achieved a 19-3 record, secured first place in the AAC regular season, and made it to the NCAA quarterfinals, JMU lacrosse has set their sights on even greater achievements in 2024. The team is determined to claim the AAC title, after losing 9-8 to Florida in last year’s championship match, and compete for a national championship. Under the leadership of head coach Shelley Klaes, who guided the Dukes to a national title in 2018, JMU is well-acquainted with the pinnacle of the sport.

The Dukes embark on the 2024 season as a top-10 preseason team, driven by the exceptional skills of one of the nation’s best players, Isabella Peterson.

Key Players

Isabella Peterson, attacker – The senior, who was honored as an All-American last season, holds the program record for the most goals scored (223). Peterson’s phenomenal scoring abilities make JMU a formidable contender for the national title.

Maddie Epke, attacker – Despite being only a sophomore, Epke is positioned to become the next JMU lacrosse standout. As a preseason All-AAC player, she contributed 17 goals, 28 assists, and 72 draw controls last season, showcasing her value and competitiveness on the national stage.

Katelyn Morgan, attacker – Morgan, a senior, completed the 2023 season with an impressive 35 assists and 21 goals. Her exceptional offensive prowess makes her an integral component alongside Peterson and other offensive stars on the team.

Kacey Knobloch, attacker – Returning from an injury in 2024, Knobloch assumes the role of team captain. She scored an impressive 38 goals in 2022, and if she remains healthy, is expected to play a crucial role within JMU’s attack. Knobloch is a graduate student.

Taylor Marchetti, midfielder – Marchetti, a senior, is known for her consistent performance. She excels in various aspects of the game and has contributed significantly to JMU’s scoring offense, netting a minimum of 19 goals in three consecutive seasons.

Caitlin Boden, goalkeeper – As a sophomore, Boden is one of the contenders vying for the goalkeeper position. With the departures of key defensive players such as Mairead Durkin and Kat Buchanan, the Dukes face some uncertainties in goalkeeping and defense.

Season Expectations

The Dukes’ aspirations for the upcoming season include contending for the AAC title and making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. It is highly likely that JMU will consider anything less than reaching the Elite Eight for a second consecutive year as a disappointment.

With their offensive prowess and the potential for defensive improvement, JMU is poised to make it to the Final Four. However, achieving this goal will depend on various factors, including the performance of the defense and the team’s overall health. Nevertheless, JMU possesses a roster that is both capable of making it to the Final Four and securing the AAC title. While winning a national championship may be an ambitious target, finishing in the top 10 and reaching the Elite Eight once again are realistic objectives for this talented team.
