The Toronto Raptors have made a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, sending point guard Dennis Schröder and forward Thaddeus Young in exchange for guard Spencer Dinwiddie, sources have confirmed. This move comes as part of the Raptors’ ongoing rebuild, following previous trades involving Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby.

As part of the deal, the Raptors will waive Dinwiddie to create salary cap space. Dinwiddie’s expiring contract will allow the team flexibility in the offseason. The Raptors are also holding on to Bruce Brown Jr., who they acquired in a previous trade.

In return, the Nets are trading veteran guard Royce O’Neale to the Phoenix Suns for three second-round picks.

Implications for the Raptors

This trade for Dinwiddie marks the Raptors’ fourth major transaction this season. The team has undergone a rebuild and is focusing on developing young talent. Earlier trades have brought in RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and draft picks from the New York Knicks, as well as Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji from the Utah Jazz.

The acquisition of Dinwiddie provides the Raptors with an expiring contract, as the veteran guard will become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. By waiving Dinwiddie, the team avoids paying a $1.5 million bonus for games played.

Dinwiddie has had a solid season with the Nets, averaging 12.6 points, six assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. He is expected to attract interest from contending teams in need of backcourt help.

With a current record of 18-33, the Raptors are not in contention for the play-in tournament in the Eastern Conference.

What the Nets Gain

In exchange for Dinwiddie, the Nets acquire two veteran players. Dennis Schröder, averaging 13.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game, will provide additional depth in the backcourt. Thaddeus Young, known for his versatility, has averaged five points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists this season.

The Nets currently have a record of 20-30 and are striving to secure a spot in the play-in tournament.
