Why Davos Matters: Understanding the World Economic Forum

Every year since its foundation in 1971, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has hosted a highly significant meeting known as Davos. But what makes this event so noteworthy?

A Temporary Transformation

For most of the year, Davos is just another picturesque ski resort nestled in the Swiss Alps. However, for one week in January, it becomes the focal point of global attention as it plays host to the annual meeting of the WEF. During this time, world leaders, influential thinkers, business moguls, and activists from all corners of the globe gather in this small alpine town to deliberate and seek solutions to pressing issues.

The World Economic Forum: A Platform for Cooperation

The WEF was established in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a Swiss-German economist and professor, with the aim of fostering global cooperation on political, social, and economic challenges. Headquartered near Geneva, this international not-for-profit organization provides a platform that brings together the public and private sectors to brainstorm and collaborate on finding solutions to global problems. The WEF’s mission statement, “Committed to improving the state of the world,” reflects its dedication to addressing pressing global issues.

The inaugural meeting of the WEF took place in Davos, and since then, the resort has become synonymous with this annual gathering.

An Exclusive Gathering of Influencers

Davos attracts an array of influential figures from various fields. Previous attendees have included the likes of Donald Trump, Greta Thunberg, and Elton John. While some criticize Davos as a mere congregation of the world’s privileged 1%, it also serves as a platform for individuals and organizations to engage, lobby, and influence global decision-makers in order to drive change on a worldwide scale.

The official guest list is exclusive, comprising approximately 2,000 to 3,000 participants and speakers. However, the meeting itself draws thousands more to its fringe events. This concentrated gathering grants unprecedented access to those seeking to engage with global leaders and influencers.

An Unavoidable Criticism

While the World Economic Forum strives to be impartial and independent, it is not immune to criticism. Detractors argue that the event’s overlapping of political and corporate interests raises contentious issues. Critics also point out the juxtaposition of addressing the climate crisis while participants often arrive by private jet, raising concerns about hypocrisy.

Davos’ Enduring Significance

Despite the criticism, Davos remains an unparalleled forum for global discussion and debate. Over its 50-year history, the event has achieved notable successes. For instance:

  • In 1988, the Davos Declaration played a role in averting armed conflict between Turkey and Greece.
  • In 1992, Nelson Mandela and South African president FW de Klerk made their first joint appearance at Davos, contributing to the end of apartheid. They were later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • In 2000, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) was launched at Davos, leading to improved access to vaccines worldwide and contributing to the vaccination of 760 million children.

While critics may view Davos as a gathering for the rich and powerful, its legacy demonstrates its significance as a platform for international cooperation and progress.
