The Biden Administration Investigates George Mason University for Antisemitism Allegations

The Biden administration has launched an investigation into George Mason University, among other academic institutions, in response to accusations of antisemitism on campus. The probe comes after anti-Israel protests erupted following a war between Jewish State and Hamas, which began on October 7, resulting in numerous casualties.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is also investigating schools such as Harvard University and Stanford University. George Mason University, which is under investigation for “discrimination involving shared ancestry,” claims to have a history of inclusivity and emphasizes its commitment to upholding the First Amendment and promoting a safe and supportive environment for all members of its community.

The investigation into George Mason University was prompted by a video shared by the Jewish advocacy group Stop Antisemitism, showing a student tearing down fliers depicting hostages taken captive by Hamas. The student accused the man filming of spreading propaganda and proceeded to crumple and rip one of the fliers. The university condemned the incident, stating that property destruction and doxing are not constitutionally protected speech.

George Mason University is not the only school that has recently come under scrutiny for anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment. At Stanford University, a non-faculty instructor singled out Jewish students during a session, instructing them to stand against a wall to illustrate Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The instructor also made offensive remarks about the Holocaust and referred to Israel as a colonizer.

Harvard University has also faced allegations of antisemitism, with over 30 student groups signing a letter condemning Israel as an “apartheid regime” following the Hamas attacks. The university’s former president, Claudine Gay, recently resigned amid allegations of plagiarism and concerns about how Harvard addresses antisemitism.

During a congressional hearing, Gay and other university presidents were questioned about their code of conduct regarding the promotion of genocide. Gay stated that it could be considered a violation, depending on the context. Following Gay’s testimony, a law firm announced that it would not interview students on campus or participate in Harvard’s on-campus events.
