Geoffrey Asmus: From UW-Madison to National-Touring Comedian

Geoffrey Asmus graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013 with degrees in religious studies, history, and Asian languages and cultures. However, it was his experience at Comedy on State’s open mic nights, located at the other end of State Street, that shaped his career as a comedian.

Asmus is now a nationally-touring comedian and his first stand-up special, “The Only Funny White Man,” can be streamed on YouTube. He recently returned to Madison to headline at Comedy on State, where it all began for him.

In an interview from his home in Brooklyn, Asmus discussed his fond memories of open mic nights in Madison, how he developed his comedic style, and his thoughts on the current state of comedy and the world.

Coming Back to Where It All Began

Returning to Comedy on State, Asmus described the experience as surreal. The club holds significant memories for him, as it was where he had his first open mic in 2013. He expressed excitement to see the progression and reconnect with the staff.

Discovering Stand-Up Comedy

Asmus admitted that he didn’t have any plans to pursue stand-up comedy when he came to Madison. It wasn’t until he discovered Comedy on State that he became interested in the art form. Reflecting on his journey, Asmus expressed gratitude for the opportunity to headline at the club.

Off Hours in Madison

While in Madison, Asmus planned to visit familiar spots such as the Plaza, but acknowledged feeling too old for the scene. He mentioned attending the Badger game on Saturday and exploring the farmers market. He also mentioned his intention to visit Picnic Point and participate in the open mic night where he first started.

Taking the Plunge into Stand-Up

Asmus shared that it took him about a year to muster the courage to perform at an open mic night. Encouragement from friends played a significant role in his decision. He also mentioned that the open mic night in Madison is renowned for its audience size and energy, which spoiled him as a comedian.

Finding His Comic Voice

Asmus described going through different phases in his comedic style. Initially, he drew inspiration from comics like Anthony Jeselnik and Steven Wright, using monotone delivery and one-liners. He even tried prop comedy, incorporating books and religious texts into his act. However, he eventually found his confidence and defined his style as “dirty but smart.”

Engaging with the Audience

Asmus’s on-stage presence, including engaging with the audience and commenting on his own jokes, was influenced by comedians like Jim Gaffigan. He found humor in having a little voice that represented the audience’s thoughts.

Exploring the Concept of “Alpha”

Asmus joked about the concept of being an “alpha” and parodied individuals who feel the need to proclaim their alpha status. He playfully commented on being secretly alpha while making fun of the idea. Although some viewers don’t fully grasp the satire, Asmus enjoys the reaction it elicits.

Adapting Material for Different Audiences

Asmus discussed the importance of tailoring his material based on his audience’s political sensibilities. He gained experience performing in various towns in Wisconsin, learning how to make his jokes resonate across different political beliefs. Overall, he believes that people come to shows to have a good time and laugh, regardless of their political views.

The State of Comedy in the End Times

Asmus expressed mixed feelings about the current state of the world. While acknowledging the challenging times for humanity, he believes it is the golden age of comedy. He noted that comedy shows are selling out everywhere, thanks to social media and people’s desire for laughter after the COVID-19 pandemic.

In conclusion, Geoffrey Asmus reflects on the best time to be a comedian and the worst time to be a human being.
