The Houston Texans, led by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, are returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Their unexpected success has defied expectations and sets up an exciting wild-card round matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Rookie Quarterback Showdown

Stroud, the second overall pick in the draft, is the only rookie starting quarterback to make the playoffs this season. At just 22 years old, he will face off against the oldest QB in the postseason, Cleveland’s Joe Flacco, who will turn 39 shortly after the game. Stroud missed the Texans’ previous loss to the Browns due to a concussion, but he is eager to prove himself in this playoff clash.

Texans’ Transformation

Stroud’s emergence has been the catalyst for the Texans’ success this season. Previously marred by a lack of victories, Houston has experienced a complete turnaround thanks to their rookie phenom. Stroud’s impact has been even more significant considering the drama surrounding former Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who refused to play and was eventually traded to the Browns. With Stroud at the helm, the Texans have a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

Flacco’s Playoff Experience

On the other side, Joe Flacco brings a wealth of playoff experience to the Browns. This will be Flacco’s 17th postseason game, and he has a remarkable record of seven playoff road wins, tying him with Tom Brady for the most in NFL history. Flacco’s calm and levelheaded approach, combined with his fundamental execution, have been key to his success on the road. The Browns will rely on Flacco’s experience to guide them through this postseason challenge.

Texans’ Remaining Playoff Veterans

Despite their recent absence from the playoffs, the Texans have a few remaining players from their last postseason run in 2019. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil, long snapper Jon Weeks, and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn are the only holdovers from that team. Their experience will be valuable in providing guidance to the younger players and ensuring they make the most of this opportunity.

Special Teams Concerns for Browns

The Browns faced some challenges in their recent win over the Texans, particularly when it came to their special teams. Kicker Dustin Hopkins sustained a hamstring injury, and punter Corey Boroquez hurt his quadriceps, forcing the team to go for 2-point conversions and convert every fourth down. To address these issues, Riley Patterson will handle kicking duties, while Boroquez returns after recovering from his injury.
