You Won’t Believe What the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon Brings to the Table – Prepare to Be Amazed!

Rewritten:

In the past, it was a common sight to see a golden retriever, Walkman, swing set, and station wagon in every American middle-class household. However, in today’s digital age, the only essential item for the bourgeoisie is still the dog, but the favorite family vehicle has become the three-row SUV. The station wagon segment has significantly shrunk, with only a small group of affluent nonconformists opting for models like the Allroads, Sport Turismos, and Cross Countrys. Despite this trend, Mercedes anticipates an increase in demand for the second-generation E-class All-Terrain. After driving the 2024 E450 4Matic, we were impressed by its style and capabilities.

Although the All-Terrain can handle various challenging surfaces and is suitable for loose gravel and deep snow, it’s important not to be deceived by its plastic-clad wheel arches, beefier bumpers, and bespoke grille. This luxury wagon lacks the necessary features for serious off-roading, such as sufficient ground clearance, steep approach and departure angles, and the ability to ford through deep mud and climb rocks. However, it’s not just a pretty vehicle. It does come with underbody protection plates, and the air suspension can be adjusted to lower or raise the vehicle’s height.

Aspiring off-roaders will appreciate the new bespoke graphics and detailed information displayed on the optional full-width Superscreen. This includes a compass, temperature and elevation readouts, tire-pressure and temperature gauge, inclination and tilt-angle meters, suspension-travel pictogram, and a ride-height adjustment button. The optional 360-degree surround-view camera system even offers a “transparent hood” view, providing a live video experience of the vehicle traversing rough terrain.

Although the All-Terrain may not be suitable for the Rubicon Trail, it can safely navigate through snowy conditions to reach remote ski lodges. It is also capable of towing up to 4600 pounds and has a generous 65 cubic feet of storage space for cargo. The multibeam LED headlights include an off-road mode that adjusts the illumination for dips and rises in the terrain when driving at low speeds. The All-Terrain shares the same E-class air suspension and adaptive dampers as other E450 models, but it is equipped with stronger Sport brakes.

In the U.S., the All-Terrain is only available with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which produces 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. While the hybrid-assist system doesn’t increase the engine’s peak output, it provides up to 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque for improved drivability and performance. As a result, the All-Terrain can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Fuel economy estimates are not available yet, but during our test drive, we observed a respectable 22 mpg.

The All-Terrain may feel big and heavy on twisty mountain roads, but it remains stable and composed. It offers excellent cornering grip and a balanced ride, allowing for an energetic flow through bends. While the steering may not be super precise, it provides confidence and control. The brakes require a bit of effort, but they consistently deliver strong performance.

The All-Terrain’s go-anywhere elements appeal to the few remaining wagon buyers, as it stays true to its core as a station wagon rather than a crossover. Its versatility and capabilities make it an appealing choice for those who want a unique and practical vehicle.
