College GameDay at JMU: A Memorable Experience for a Growing Fan Base
A few years ago, I was torn between James Madison University (JMU) and the University of Virginia (UVA) for my college choice. As a die-hard UVA hoops fan, it was a tough decision, but my love for JMU eventually won me over. Little did I know that one game between UVA and JMU would solidify my decision and lead to an unforgettable experience.
Fast forward to November 17, 2023, when I walked into the Atlantic Union Bank Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. JMU was set to take on Radford, and the buzz on campus was electric. Earlier in the day, ESPN’s College GameDay had aired on the Quad, and the energy was palpable. The student section was packed, and the atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
The game was intense, and the newly reinstated “Electric Zoo” student section was in full force. Every score and defensive stand elicited an eruption of noise, and the crowd was completely engaged. It was a basketball fan’s dream come true, and I felt a sense of pride in my school that I had never felt before.
The next morning, after an eventful night of camping out for College GameDay, the show finally began. The crowd went wild, and seeing the size of the full crowd on the big screens was awe-inspiring. At that moment, I knew that my love for JMU had reached a whole new level. The College GameDay experience was long-lasting and incredibly fun, with chants, sign reading, and even a performance by the Jonas Brothers.
After the show, it was time for the much-anticipated football game against Appalachian State. The stadium was packed, and the student section was unruly in the best way possible. Despite the disappointing outcome of the game, the crowd stayed until the very end, showing unwavering support for the team. It was a testament to the growing fan base at JMU and the passion that the students and fans have for their school.
This experience showed me that JMU’s fan support is stronger than ever. The school’s national recognition and success in athletics have created a sense of pride among current and prospective students. There is a new audience of young people who are drawn to JMU’s accomplishments and want to be a part of it. This support will continue to grow as JMU’s football team becomes even more successful.
I am proud to be a Duke, and I am excited to see what the future holds for JMU. The College GameDay experience was just a glimpse of the immense potential and passion that exists within the JMU community.
