Apple Rumored to Unveil New iMac and MacBook Pro Models

Last week, reports suggested that Apple would introduce new iPads on October 17th, but the expected launch did not materialize. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple might announce a new iMac in the coming days, potentially on October 30th or 31st. Additionally, Gurman speculates that updated versions of the MacBook Pro, including M3 variants of the 14-inch and 16-inch models, could also be unveiled alongside the iMac.

Contradictory Reports on MacBook Pro Refresh

It is worth noting that Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo previously hinted that the M3 Macs might not be released this year, while also indicating that the iMac refresh would be postponed until next year. However, Gurman’s recent claims seem to challenge these predictions.

Long Overdue Update for iMac

Gurman highlights that iMac owners have been waiting for an update for over 900 days, contrary to Apple’s original plans. Initially, Apple intended to launch the M2 iMac Pro followed by a refresh of the 24-inch iMac. However, due to cost concerns, Apple had to abandon the iMac Pro and instead introduced the Mac Studio and Studio Display combo.

Short Supply of iMac Suggests Impending Launch

Gurman also draws attention to the current shortage of iMac units at Apple stores, which indicates that a product launch centered around Macs might be on the horizon. This shortage further supports his claims of an upcoming iMac and MacBook Pro announcement.

Anticipated MacBook Pro Refresh

Further speculations suggest that apart from the iMac, Apple might also refresh the 13-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Delayed shipping estimates for certain configurations of the MacBook Pro indicate the possibility of an impending update.

Potential Confusion Surrounding MacBook Pro Updates

If the MacBook Pro refresh does occur, it would mean that the 14-inch and 16-inch models would receive updates less than a year after the M2 Pro/Max release. This timeline raises questions about Apple’s strategy. Furthermore, it indicates that the M3 Pro/Max MacBooks might be launched before the base model M3 MacBook Air, which is still expected in 2024. Gurman suggests that Apple has made significant progress with the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro variants powered by advanced M3 processors.

Possible Announcement Timing

Apple has scheduled its earnings report for the September 2023 quarter on November 2nd. Considering this, it is possible that Apple might unveil the new Macs on October 30th or 31st. A similar approach was taken by Apple in 2018 when it held an iPad and Mac event just days prior to its earnings call.
