A tragic incident occurred in the Howe Sound area on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a snorkeler. Squamish RCMP responded to reports of a sudden death between Furry Creek and Oliver’s Landing at approximately 1 p.m. Unfortunately, the individual could not be saved.
Authorities are working to gather more information about the incident, and Global News has reached out to BC Emergency Health Services and the BC Coroner’s Service for additional details.
This incident comes just a month after the release of a report by the Coroner’s Service, which revealed that 86 people in British Columbia lost their lives to drowning in the past year. Shockingly, the data also highlighted a stark gender disparity, with men being four times more likely to drown compared to women. Thus far, there have been 19 drowning deaths in the province this year.
In an effort to raise awareness about water safety, the Lifesaving Society is emphasizing the unpredictable nature of water and urging everyone to prioritize safety, especially with the upcoming long weekend.
Details regarding the gender and age of the victim have not been disclosed by the Squamish RCMP.
