In the world of gaming, Fortnite has become one of the most popular brands with over 230 million players each month. Despite competition from other games like Apex Legends and Valorant, Fortnite has maintained its strong following. However, the parent company of Fortnite, Epic Games, recently announced a massive round of layoffs. Surprisingly, the layoffs were not due to competition, but rather self-inflicted wounds.

Epic Games made the decision to downsize because of an increase in participation in creator-generated content within Fortnite. While this revenue-sharing decision has been successful in allowing users to create and monetize content, it has also cannibalized Epic Games’ more financially lucrative content. The company’s own creation has become a parasite that is overtaking the main game.

This situation parallels the sin of pride that many individuals face. It is easy to become proud and take credit for our accomplishments, forgetting that everything we have is a gift from God. Pride is the original sin and can lead to downfall. Just as Epic Games failed to recognize the cannibalization caused by their own creation, we too can become sabotaged by our own success if we allow pride to take root.

The cure for pride is true humility, not a negative self-image. Humility means giving all the glory and praise to God for every good thing in our lives, big or small. Recognizing that we are nothing without God’s grace and blessings allows us to resist the temptations of pride. Ultimately, humility enables us to reflect God’s light and draw others closer to Him.
