Downtown PKB is actively working to bring development and new business to downtown Parkersburg. Amanda Stevens, the Executive Director of Downtown PKB, provided an update to the Wood County Commission on the group’s recent efforts. Here are the key highlights:

Record Attendance at Winterfest and Parkersburg Christmas Parade

Stevens emphasized the “record attendance” at Winterfest and the Parkersburg Christmas Parade. The events saw high turnout due to good weather and warm temperatures.

Downtown Parkersburg Historic District

Downtown Parkersburg recently obtained a new historic district designation, which has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This marks Parkersburg’s fourth historic district. Stevens clarified that there are no downsides to this designation and highlighted the opportunities it presents, such as applying for historic tax credits and preservation grants.

Enhancing the Smoot Theater

County officials expressed their desire to see more activity at the Smoot Theater, similar to what is seen at the Peoples Bank Theater in Marietta. Stevens mentioned that Downtown PKB’s board has discussed ways to highlight the theater and attract investment but emphasized that the theater has its own board responsible for planning events and shows.

Economic Development Focus

Downtown PKB has shifted its focus towards economic development, aiming to complement the existing arts and culture district in downtown Parkersburg. The organization has secured a $75,000 grant for renovating a blighted property at 820 Market St., near the new Children’s Museum. Stevens expressed confidence that the building will be developed within the next six months.

Potential Business and Apartment Developments

Stevens mentioned that there is significant interest in locating businesses and apartment developments in downtown Parkersburg. The Wood County Society is also planning an expansion on Eighth Street.

Challenges and Projects

The discussion touched upon various challenges and projects in downtown Parkersburg:

  • The Dils Center: The new owner is currently unable to proceed with repairs and attract tenants due to extended travel restrictions caused by the Israeli-Hamas war.
  • Sumner School Building: The building, with its historical significance, requires additional caretakers and development plans.

Downtown Parkersburg’s Resilience

Despite the challenges faced, Stevens affirmed her optimism about Downtown Parkersburg. She highlighted the resilience of the downtown area, with numerous restaurants and retail establishments continuing to attract people. Stevens also acknowledged the support from Main Street organizations and associations.

Positive Community Impact

County officials commended Stevens for her dedication to promoting events, downtown development, and overall community engagement. Despite the challenges, Stevens expressed her commitment to tackling them head-on.
