VillageReach is a global non-profit organization embarking on an exciting phase to reach 100 million people in Africa by the end of FY2026. As the Legal Counsel, your role will be vital in guiding our work and expanding our reach, ensuring that we receive the necessary support and effectively manage risk. You will collaborate with various leaders and professionals within the organization, as well as outside counsel based in Africa. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Legal advice:

  • Provide legal expertise and guidance on a wide range of issues to support the organization’s strategies, objectives, and activities
  • Analyze legal issues and strike the right balance between risk management and pursuing VillageReach’s goals
  • Advise on, prepare, and review various contracts, including governmental and multi-lateral agreements
  • Develop and enhance contracting tools, while tracking contracts across the organization
  • Lead legal awareness initiatives and facilitate training on legal and risk management topics

Risk Management:

  • Develop, implement, and report on compliance with sound risk management strategies and processes
  • Oversee and manage VillageReach’s insurance portfolio
  • Guide leaders, managers, and staff in effectively managing and mitigating risks in a complex operating environment

Registrations and Global Entities:

  • Oversee compliance with global foreign registrations and ensure they are up-to-date
  • Collaborate with local counsel to ensure compliance with corporate, tax, employment, and other filing requirements

Outside counsel:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with outside legal counsel in Africa

To succeed in this role, the individual must meet the following requirements:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not involve direct supervision of others.

Education & Experience:

  • JD degree required, with active registration to practice law in the US
  • At least 8 years of legal experience, with at least 1 year in a non-profit organization
  • Prior experience at international organizations highly preferred
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills, ability to assess and manage risk in a complex operating environment
  • Proven success in developing and implementing process improvements
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet a wide range of legal needs in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly collaborative, with experience building organizational capacity in a global, matrixed setting

Other Qualifications:

  • Compliance with VillageReach’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy
  • Expertise in partnering with racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse groups
  • Understanding of challenges in working in rural, underserved, and low-income contexts; experience in a low-income country is a plus
  • Proficient in the latest business systems and management technology, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel)
  • Proficiency in English required; Portuguese and French skills desired

Environment and Physical Demands:

VillageReach adopts an open work environment, with shared spaces and accessible task and conference rooms. The noise level is usually quiet. Due to time zone differences, US-based staff must be available for early morning meetings starting at 6 am. African-based staff are expected to be available for late afternoon/evening meetings up to 6 pm.

Approximately 90% of the workday is spent sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

VillageReach follows a transparent compensation structure based on relevant market standards. The salary range for this position is $114,900 to $142,300, considering an individual’s experience, education, and internal equity. We do not inquire about salary history.
