JMU Football Defense: Areas for Improvement in the Transfer Portal
The JMU Dukes had a strong defensive performance in the 2023 season, allowing only 19.5 points per game. However, with several key departures and the arrival of new head coach Bob Chesney, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed to maintain that level of dominance in the coming seasons.
Defensive Line: A Priority
The loss of James Carpenter, Mikail Kamara, Jamree Kromah, and Jalen Green has left a significant void in the Dukes’ defensive line. Immanuel Bush, Tyrique Tucker, and Amar Thomas show promise, but additional depth and experience are necessary to anchor the line effectively.
The team should prioritize targeting defensive ends in the transfer portal, with players like Elijah Hills from Albany and Terry Lockett from Syracuse as potential impactful additions.
Linebacker: Room for Improvement
While the addition of Jacob Dobbs from Holy Cross helps shore up the linebacker position, further reinforcements are needed. Trent Hendrick and Dobbs form a solid starting duo, but to field three linebackers on the field, JMU must turn to a younger player or find another transfer.
Notable losses include Aiden Fisher, Jailin Walker, and Taurus Jones, who were key contributors to the Dukes’ standout linebacker unit. However, with the arrival of Dobbs and additional transfers, the position should maintain its strength.
Cornerback: Secure but Additional Depth Needed
JMU’s starting cornerbacks, Chauncey Logan and D’Angelo Ponds, are expected to return, offering stability at the position. However, to enhance competition and provide depth, the Dukes may consider adding 1-2 defensive backs who can play both cornerback and safety.
Terrence Spence from Holy Cross is a versatile player to watch for as a potential defensive back addition, bringing valuable experience and a knack for blocking kicks.
Safety/Rover: Major Need
Jacob Thomas returns as a reliable safety, but the graduation of five safeties/rovers from the two deep creates a significant void. While the high school recruiting class includes talented defensive backs, JMU should look to the transfer portal for an experienced safety to partner with Thomas.
Additions in the safety position could bring healthy competition for the starting spots, with Terry Jones from Old Dominion being a highly desirable addition if he chooses to remain in the Sun Belt.
Special Teams: Minor Adjustments
Punter Ryan Hanson and long snapper Jack Mowrey are set to continue their roles, providing stability in the special teams unit. However, with Camden Wise’s eligibility expired, JMU may search for a kicker through the transfer portal or high school recruitment to enhance competition in that position.
Additionally, the team may explore options for bolstering the return game through transfers, potentially giving a wide receiver or running back transfer an opportunity to excel as the punt or kick returner in the 2024 season.
