Home Depot Launches Online Portal “Designed with Millennials in Mind”
Home Depot has recently launched an online portal called “Designed with Millennials in Mind,” which aims to assist first-time homeowners in fixing or reimagining their homes. The portal provides DIY guides, free virtual workshops, and step-by-step guidance on various projects, as well as teaching the fundamentals of homecare, from HVAC and plumbing to seasonal maintenance. Users can access livestream and on-demand options for convenience.
A survey commissioned by Home Depot revealed the following insights about millennials’ homeownership concerns:
- Around half (53%) of millennials worry about purchasing their first home, which is on par with the stress levels of starting a family (57%) and career advancement (52%).
- Home maintenance (74%) and home improvement projects (68%) are the most stressful aspects of homeownership for millennials.
- When it comes to learning how to tackle DIY projects, the majority (70%) of millennials would turn to YouTube or other online videos rather than learning from a parent, family member, or friend (54%).
Lowe’s Launches DIY-U to Cater to Rising Homeownership Levels Among Millennials
In February 2022, Lowe’s also recognized the growing homeownership levels among millennials and unveiled DIY-U by Lowe’s. Initially, DIY-U featured limited-seat monthly livestreams and has since expanded into a collection of on-demand videos covering projects, repairs, and common maintenance needs. The program also includes in-store workshops available at select locations.
In-store and virtual workshops have become prevalent examples of the experiential retail trend embraced by various retailers. Apple, for example, is known for its popular free in-store workshops, while Sephora offers free online classes on beauty tips. REI offers in-store workshops on camping and hiking, while Michaels provides a wide range of crafts classes online and in-store, mostly for free. Joann offers digital sewing and quilting classes for a small fee.
Williams Sonoma is renowned for its in-store and virtual cooking classes, often led by acclaimed chefs. In contrast, Publix recently closed its in-store Aprons Cooking Schools but continues to offer online classes. According to Publix, their customers’ evolving needs have led them to embrace online classes for learning to cook.
