The Rise of Atlanta as an Up-and-Coming Foodie Destination
When it comes to iconic American foodie cities, Atlanta, Georgia, hasn’t traditionally been at the top of the list. However, that is all about to change, as the city has recently gained international recognition with the release of the first Michelin guide featuring Atlanta. The guide awarded 10 Bib Gourmands, five new one-star restaurants, and two new green stars, confirming Atlanta’s status as a culinary capital.
The Best Burger in America?
During a trip to Atlanta, I had the pleasure of meeting David Nettey, owner of Food Tours Atlanta, at Ponce City Market. This former factory and warehouse has been transformed into a vibrant hub of restaurants, shops, and bars. At H&F Burger, known for making everything from scratch except the American cheese slices, I had the chance to try what has been widely acclaimed as “the best burger in America.” Trust me, it did not disappoint. Nettey shared, “Food in Atlanta is colorful, diverse, and vibrant. There is a major food scene here, and I honestly think people who come here are surprised.”
After indulging in burgers, we enjoyed a scoop of butter pecan ice cream from Honeysuckle Gelato, a local producer in the Deep South, followed by a locally brewed IPA from The Tap on Ponce, which prioritizes independent local breweries. The emphasis on locality is a significant aspect of Atlanta’s culinary scene.
‘A Really Exciting Time for Atlanta’
The next day, we explored the High Museum of Art, which houses an impressive collection of European and American masterpieces. For lunch, we visited Twin Smokers BBQ in downtown Atlanta. BBQ is deeply rooted in Southern culture, and Twin Smokers BBQ takes it to another level. From the mouthwatering sides to the tender smoked brisket and flavorful turkey, it was an experience that showcased the South’s love for BBQ.
However, Atlanta’s cuisine isn’t only about burgers and BBQ. At Lyla Lila, the team has curated an innovative European-inspired menu with a Southern influence. Our waiter, Stafford, shared his extensive knowledge of the food and wine, highlighting Atlanta as one of the best cities in the US for food. The porcelet with mint salsa verde and grilled Georgia peaches was a standout dish, perfectly combining Southern flavors with delicate elegance.

Atlanta truly captivated me with its vibrant food scene, which pays homage to its rich culinary heritage while embracing innovation. Each dish tells a story, showcasing the city’s diverse culinary culture and flavors. It’s about time Atlanta received the recognition it deserves from the experts in the industry.
