Gladstone Girls Basketball Showcases Dominant Defense in 39-20 Road Victory over Manistique

MANISTIQUE — In a display of defensive excellence, the No. 4 Gladstone girls basketball team secured a commanding 39-20 win on the road against Manistique on Thursday. With a season average of only giving up 35 points per game, the Braves showcased their defensive prowess by holding their opponents well below their scoring average.

The game tipped off with an early 2-0 lead for Manistique, but Gladstone’s Lillie Johnson quickly responded with a basket to tie the game. The Braves then went on an 8-0 run, fueled by strong defensive play and efficient scoring, to take an 8-2 lead. Despite efforts from Manistique’s Jolynn Zellar, who contributed with a layup, Gladstone maintained control throughout the first quarter, ending with an 18-8 advantage.

The Braves continued to dominate in the second quarter, forcing seven turnovers but only converting four points from those opportunities. Nevertheless, they entered halftime with a comfortable 26-13 lead.

The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to score. Gladstone’s Eva Pankonien and Lillie Johnson managed to extend their team’s lead to 31-13 heading into the final quarter.

Manistique fought back at the start of the fourth quarter, scoring seven points, but ultimately fell short as the Braves maintained control until the end.

With this victory, Gladstone remains a force to be reckoned with defensively, as they prepare to face No. 1 ranked Negaunee in their next matchup. Meanwhile, Manistique will look to improve their offense as they gear up to play against Gwinn.
