Braves Lock Down Defense in Victory Against Marinette
Gladstone Braves Secure Victory with Impressive Defensive Effort
MENOMINEE — The Gladstone Braves showcased their defensive prowess in a hard-fought victory over Marinette at the 2023 Border Battle Holiday Tournament. Led by senior Nick Matthews’ 16 points, the Braves stifled Marinette to secure a 43-37 win.
Coach Jake Kiesby praised his team’s outstanding defensive effort, highlighting their ability to box out and correct previous mistakes. The Braves started the second half with Matthews leading the offensive charge, earning an and-1 play to extend their lead to 21-14.
Despite Marinette’s attempts to rally, the Braves maintained control throughout the game. A 9-2 run in the third quarter pushed their lead to 30-23 heading into the final period.
Although the Marines fought back, closing the gap to 34-30 with 2:30 remaining, they couldn’t overcome the Braves’ resilient defense. Gladstone held on to secure the win and improve their record to 2-5.
Kiesby acknowledged the Braves’ progress, pointing out their improved consistency in the second half. He praised Matthews’ performance, highlighting his work ethic and physicality on the court.
Matthews led the team with 16 points and was supported by Luke Bracket’s nine points and Drake Johnson’s eight points. Kaden Gibbs and Thomas Tackman also contributed with five points each.
The Braves’ next challenge is a matchup against Green Bay West on Saturday. The 2023 Border Battle Holiday Tournament concludes with a game between Menominee and Marinette.
