Toronto FC unveils roster changes under new coach John Herdman

Toronto FC, the struggling MLS club, has begun its roster overhaul under new coach John Herdman. The team has declined options on several players, including goalkeepers Greg Ranjitsingh and Tomás Romero, defender Themi Antonoglou, midfielder Víctor Vázquez, and forward CJ Sapong.

Cristian Gutierrez is set to become a free agent at the end of the year, while midfielder Franco Ibarra has returned to Atlanta as his loan with Toronto expires. Additionally, longtime captain Michael Bradley has left the team to pursue a coaching career in Norway.

Despite finishing last in the league at 4-20-10, Toronto FC is still in discussions with centre back Aime Mabika, who has a 2024 contract option. Midfielder Kosi Thompson is currently on loan with Lillestrøm SK until the end of the 2023 season, with the Norwegian club having the option to make the transfer permanent for 2024.

Toronto exercises options on Gavran and Coello

Toronto FC has exercised the contract options on goalkeeper Luka Gavran and midfielder Alonso Coello, both of whom have shown promise in the team’s otherwise disappointing season.

Gavran, a 23-year-old rookie drafted in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, impressed in his four starts as Toronto’s goalkeeper. Coello, a 24-year-old Spaniard, made 21 league appearances in his rookie season and provided stability in the defensive midfield role.

Future uncertain for remaining players

While some players have secured their spots for the 2024 season, others face uncertain futures. The high-priced Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi are among the players whose contracts may be difficult to move.

Vázquez, who had a limited role in this season, appeared in just 12 league games. Sapong, who joined Toronto in an April trade, had one goal in 20 league appearances.
