Exciting Youth Tennis Program Coming to New Ulm

A new youth tennis program is headed to the rec center courts starting Nov. 21. Park and Rec Director Joey Schugel said they would like to add more sessions after the first one ends Dec. 19, but it will depend on registration numbers.

A fantastic opportunity awaits children and parents in New Ulm as a new youth tennis program is set to launch this winter. Thanks to a generous $1,500 grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the Park and Recreation Commission is able to provide the necessary resources for the program’s initiation.

“The USTA is always eager to promote the game of tennis among youth,” expressed Park and Rec Director Joey Schugel. He further explained that the department won’t face any long-term financial impacts as the grant covers the initial start-up costs. Going forward, program fees will cover instructor payments and other related expenses.

The New Ulm Tennis Association played a pivotal role in securing this funding opportunity. Recognizing the importance of the program, the association sought external support to get it up and running. Schugel commended their dedication, highlighting that the grant has already been applied for, accepted, and funds have been received.

Although tennis may seem like an unconventional choice for a winter sports program, the well-equipped rec center in New Ulm provides the perfect venue for this out-of-the-box idea. Schugel emphasized that the program will take place at the rec center’s indoor multi-purpose courts during winter. There are plans to offer multiple winter sessions leading into the spring, depending on the registration numbers. Moreover, there is a possibility of incorporating outdoor activities in the spring, although no decisions have been made yet.

The first session is currently open for registration until Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. It is designed for children aged 6-12, running from Nov. 28 to Dec. 19, with sessions held every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. To register online, a New Ulm Park and Rec Account is required.
