Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise – A Disappointing Sequel

I love Air Zonk. In a sea of shooters, it rose to the top as one of the best shooters for the Turbo Grafx-16. However, its sequel, Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise, fails to live up to expectations. While it’s not a terrible game, it falls short compared to its predecessor.

Missed Potential

Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise was released just a year after the first game. Despite the success of Air Zonk, the development duties for the sequel were given to the relatively unknown studio, Dual. This decision proved to be a mistake. Dual’s previous works, Psychosis and Predator for NES, were not memorable, and Super Air Zonk suffers a similar fate.

Changes in the Weapon System

The weapon system in Super Air Zonk has been modified, some for the better and some for the worse. Unlike in Air Zonk, you no longer choose a partner before each stage. Instead, you have the opportunity to merge with a designated creature halfway through each level. This new system allows for more versatility, as your partner can separate briefly and assist you in dealing damage. However, outside of the partnership, your basic weaponry is weak, and overall, it feels lacking compared to the wide range of powerful weapons in Air Zonk.

Disappointing Level Design

One of Air Zonk’s flaws was its short length, leaving players wanting more. Super Air Zonk attempted to address this issue by providing longer gameplay, but unfortunately, it falls short in terms of level design. The introduction of obstacles and walls to navigate feels forced and fails to bring excitement. The pacing is sluggish, and there is a lot of dead air throughout the game. The bosses, with their high health, only add to the frustration.

A Surprisingly Easy Game

Air Zonk was known for being one of the easier shooters, but somehow, Super Air Zonk manages to be even easier. The game generously awards extra lives, making it difficult to die outside of boss battles. With no life bar but the ability to sustain two hits, the lack of challenge becomes evident. While the game may be worth playing through once, it is not a priority due to its ease and lack of compelling gameplay.

A Step Back in Visuals

Super Air Zonk is a CD title, which raised expectations for improved visuals. However, the game surprises players by looking worse than its predecessor. The removal of the stunning parallax scrolling leaves the game feeling flat and dated. The enemy designs are still creative, but the overall presentation is a disappointment. The one bright spot is the excellent rockabilly soundtrack, which adds a unique flair to the game.

A Lackluster Sequel

Super Air Zonk falls short in numerous aspects, lacking the passion that made its predecessor great. As one of the last Turbo Duo games released in the US, it is disappointing to end on such a low note. While it is a competent game overall, it fails to live up to the legacy of Air Zonk and leaves players wanting more.
