#### Taking Amateur Boxers to the Mainland: Southside Boxing Club Headed to the Gene Lewis Invitational

Southside Boxing Club, led by Nante Manangan, has been taking amateur boxers to mainland tournaments for many years. However, their upcoming trip to the 48th Annual Gene Lewis Invitational in Mesa, Arizona holds special meaning. This year, Manangan will be guiding nine boxers to the event, two of whom have been displaced from Lahaina due to unfortunate circumstances. Three of the boxers are defending champions at the USA Boxing event, making this trip even more significant.

Warren Garcia-Bicoy, a 24-year-old who was named the outstanding boxer at last year’s tournament, will be returning to defend his title. Etienne Hardy, 19, is also a returning champ in the 156-pound weight category, while 14-year-old Anthony “The Executioner” Farias-Vasquez will be moving up to the 114-pound weight category this year. Rico Manangan, Nante’s son, and Pascal Hardy will also be coaches at the event. The other boxers representing Southside Boxing Club include Naishma Farias-Vasquez, Damien Browne, Julian De La Cruz, Micah Diaz, Dayson Duque, and Deejay Duque.

The Duque brothers, Dayson and Deejay, have joined the Kihei club after being displaced from Lahaina due to a wildfire in August. Sadly, they lost their gym and many possessions. However, they have found a new home with Southside Boxing Club and have adjusted well. Both brothers have already fought in a few matches and are scheduled to compete at the upcoming tournament.

Nante Manangan is particularly proud of Warren Garcia-Bicoy, who has been with the club since he was 9 years old. Last year’s tournament was his first real match, and he went on to win the Most Outstanding Boxer award. Garcia-Bicoy’s commitment and dedication to boxing have impressed everyone, and he has continued to excel in the sport ever since.

Another standout boxer from Southside Boxing Club is Etienne Hardy, who has the potential to become a professional boxing champion. He has been with the club for six years and has been named the Most Outstanding Boxer at their last two tournaments.

As the Southside Boxing Club heads to the Gene Lewis Invitational, they carry not only their skills and determination but also the hopes and support of their community. It is a journey that symbolizes resilience, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence in the sport of boxing.
