Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop dominates Mayer Lutheran in nonconference boys basketball

On Monday, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) showcased their strength in a nonconference boys basketball game against Mayer Lutheran, leading by as many as 34 points en route to an 85-63 victory.

Dominic Rose stood out with an impressive performance, contributing 32 points and leading the Thunderbirds’ strong defensive effort. Ashton Buboltz added 10 points, while Alex Johnson scored 9 points for GFW.

Rose emphasized the team’s commitment to pushing the pace and credited his teammates for their support. As he put it, “teammates pushing the ball always, fighting for rebounds and always looking ahead and sharing the ball… Fast breaks are a huge thing for us.”

Furthermore, Rose highlighted the team’s unique defensive style, which proved to be a challenge for Mayer Lutheran. He stated, “It’s a different look for them, and they can’t really run what they want to run.”

GFW head coach Ryan Jacobson commended Rose’s leadership and defensive skills, recognizing his significant contribution to the team’s success. Jacobson stated, “Dom Rose really played focused, he was dialed in… I don’t know how many steals he had, but it had to be close to 10. And he finished and converted on the other end.”

The victory was not without its downside, as GFW’s top guard, Cole Jacobson, exited the game with a right ankle injury. The team will rely on Braylan Freitag and Layton Hamre to step up in Jacobson’s absence.

From the opening moments, GFW showcased their dominance, going on a 9-0 run to establish a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game. They ended the first half with a comfortable 46-26 advantage, extending it with a 21-3 run after halftime to make it 52-26.

With a commanding lead, GFW had the opportunity to give playing time to their bench players, holding onto a comfortable margin of victory that fluctuated between 34 and 22 points throughout the second half.

GFW, with a record of 9-8, will host Le Sueur-Henderson in their next game on Tuesday.
