Forbes – The Allure of the 2023 Range Rover: Luxury, Comfort, and Performance

The wealthy are often criticized for owning Range Rovers, especially if they never utilize the off-roading capabilities of these massive SUVs. However, after spending a few hours driving the 2023 Range Rover, it becomes clear why people are drawn to these vehicles.

I recently had the opportunity to test drive the Range Rover with my son. As a parent, I wanted to spend quality time with him, considering my attention is mostly focused on our youngest child. My son is used to riding in my E90 3 Series, which is reasonably quiet inside, but it does not compare to the refinement of the Range Rover. As night fell and the ambient lighting bathed the cabin, the quiet and luxury of the Range Rover immediately lulled him to sleep.

The two-hour drive home felt like a first-class experience, with minimal wind noise and a subtle V8 rumble accompanying me. It was one of the most comfortable, relaxing, and luxurious drives I have ever experienced, truly showcasing why so many people choose to buy Range Rovers.

In terms of specifications, the 2023 Range Rover P530 is equipped with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While some enthusiasts may be wary of a German engine in a British SUV, the powertrain performs exceptionally well. The power is evenly distributed to all four wheels through two electronic locking differentials, providing excellent traction and control.

In terms of design, the new Range Rover stays true to its iconic and recognizable aesthetic. The subtle, refined exterior design sets it apart from flashier SUVs, and the optional 23-inch SV Bespoke wheels add a touch of visual flair. Inside, the cabin is luxurious, with high-quality materials, comfortable seats, and beautiful wood trim. The Range Rover is also surprisingly practical as a family car, with easy access to the back seats and ample storage space.

On the road, the Range Rover’s adaptive air suspension provides a smooth and comfortable ride. The steering is nicely weighted, offering just the right amount of feedback. While it may not be the sportiest SUV, it handles corners with composure, thanks to its air suspension and active anti-roll bars.

While I did not have the opportunity to test the off-road capabilities of the Range Rover, it is well-regarded for its ability to handle various terrains. With two locking differentials, adjustable air suspension, and advanced off-road screens, the Range Rover is equipped for any adventure.

Despite its impressive performance and luxurious features, the Range Rover does have some drawbacks. The touchscreen infotainment software can feel a bit slow, and the touch capacitive climate control buttons are not the most user-friendly. However, these minor issues do not detract from the overall experience of driving the Range Rover.

As for pricing, the 2023 Range Rover starts at $108,875 for the base SE model. The Long Wheelbase seven-seat model, like the one I tested, starts at $137,875, but with options, it can reach a sticker price of $153,225. While the price may seem steep, Range Rover buyers are often more concerned with the luxury and experience the SUV provides than the cost.

When it comes to competition, the closest rival to the Range Rover is the Lexus LX 600, which offers a similar level of luxury and off-road capabilities. Other alternatives include the BMW X7 and the Mercedes GLS-Class, but they do not match the Range Rover in terms of off-road performance. The iconic Mercedes G-Wagen is another option, although it lacks the spaciousness and seating capacity of the Range Rover.

In terms of fuel economy, the Range Rover’s large size and powerful engine result in below-average fuel efficiency. During my testing, I averaged around 17.1 mpg, falling short of the EPA-rated 18 mpg average.

While the Range Rover may not be the most economical choice, its versatility, luxury, and performance make it a highly desirable SUV. Whether you are a fashion influencer, a parent in need of a practical family car, or an off-road enthusiast, the Range Rover delivers a first-class driving experience.

In conclusion, the 2023 Range Rover offers a combination of luxury, comfort, and performance that few other vehicles can match. Despite its high price tag and fuel consumption, the Range Rover’s versatility and impressive features make it an appealing choice for those seeking the ultimate SUV experience.
