Unbelievable! New Guelph recreation centre shocks locals as groundbreaking begins!

New Recreation Centre Underway in Guelph’s South End

Construction has begun on a new recreation centre in the south end of Guelph. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday at the site of the facility, which will be located on Poppy Drive south of Clair Road and behind Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School. The $115 million building will feature twin ice pads, a competitive and recreational pool, a double gymnasium, an indoor running track, and more. Excavators can already be seen on the site, and the City of Guelph staff have set up hockey nets, daycare equipment, and pool markers to indicate where the amenities will be once construction is completed.

Ken Yee Chew, a councillor for Ward 6 where the facility is being built, commended the hard work of the city staff in making the project a reality. Mayor Cam Guthrie expressed relief that construction has finally started, as the project has been promised for a long time. He acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the construction, impacting trades, materials, and costs. However, Guthrie is thrilled to see the project come to fruition.

The new recreation centre comes at a time when the Clairfields area of Guelph is experiencing rapid growth, with an estimated 16,000 or more people expected to live in the area over the next 10 to 15 years. Guthrie emphasized that this growth necessitates community facilities like the new centre. Yee Chew echoed this sentiment and said that residents have been waiting for over 20 years for a community centre to be built in the area. He expressed excitement that the wait is finally over and residents and their families will soon have a place to enjoy.

The construction is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2026.
