At this year’s Gamescom, we had the opportunity to experience a wide range of horror and horror-adjacent titles. Despite our busy schedule, we managed to check out some exciting projects that you might not have heard of. Here are nine of the best games that you should have on your radar:

1. CONSCRIPT: Set in the backdrop of World War 1, CONSCRIPT offers a unique take on survival horror. Instead of supernatural creatures, you face the everyday horrors of war. Developed by a solo developer and history graduate, this game aims to depict the real terrors of battle. The demo we played impressed us with its realistic portrayal of trench warfare. Published by Team17, CONSCRIPT is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

2. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd: This game is a faithful adaptation of the iconic Hellboy comics, combining a recognizable art style with thrilling gameplay. Developed in partnership with Dark Horse and original creator Mike Mignola, the game features the same dark and gothic atmosphere as the comics. Get ready to interact with iconic characters, wield powerful weapons, and battle eldritch creatures. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is set to release on October 4th for various platforms.

3. Forgive Me Father 2: This is the sequel to a popular boomer shooter that offers a Lovecraftian-themed adventure. With stunning hand-drawn art and intense combat, Forgive Me Father 2 aims to deliver an even more satisfying and gory experience. The game introduces new interactive levels, an expanded upgrade system, and improved sprite animations. Get ready to obliterate cosmic horrors and immerse yourself in the game’s stylish world.

4. Diluvian Ultra: Diluvian Ultra is another boomer shooter that stands out with its innovative approach to combat. Enemies have dual health bars, one for armor and one for life force, which can only be depleted by specific colored attacks. Your goal is to strategically whittle down these health bars to deal lethal damage. The game offers fast-paced action and a variety of weapons to experiment with. Developed by Upstream Arcade, Diluvian Ultra is definitely one to watch.

5. Ripout: This procedurally generated co-op game combines survival, crafting, and horror elements in a unique way. Explore derelict spaceships infested with killer cyborgs and withstand hordes of infected creatures. What sets Ripout apart is its measured pacing, emphasizing mounting dread and anticipation. The game also features a versatile pet-gun, offering a range of different attacks and strategies. Published by 3D Realms, Ripout is set to release later this year on various platforms.

6. Remedium: Combining post-apocalyptic sci-fi, renaissance history, and viral outbreak horror, Remedium creates a fascinating and unique world. Set in a world ravaged by a deadly plague, you embark on a quest to find a cure. The gameplay features platforming, combat, and the ability to augment your weapons with elemental properties through the science of alchemy. The Time I Have Left offers a countdown mechanic, forcing you to make meaningful choices before the clock runs out.

7. Vorax: This open-world survival crafting game distinguishes itself with its diverse and grotesque bestiary. Fight giant deformed babies, bloated mutants, and demonic creatures in a candy-colored bloodbath. The game offers a familiar gameplay loop of resource gathering and base building but stands out with its eccentric enemies and story-driven approach. Developed by IndieGala, Vorax is available to download on Steam for playtesting.

8. Gori: Cuddly Carnage: An arcade-style hack and slash game, Gori: Cuddly Carnage features an anthropomorphic, hover-boarding kitty cat on a mission to take down an army of sentient unicorn plushies. With fast-paced combat and vibrant visuals, this game offers a whirlwind of colorful and ridiculous action. Published by Wired Productions, Gori: Cuddly Carnage is set to release on multiple platforms in 2023.

9. The Time Before I Have Left: This game brings a unique twist to the survival genre, as you play a woman with only six hours left to live. Navigate an underground facility and a nightmare dimension filled with demonic creatures. The game features a countdown mechanic and turn-based combat, adding an urgency to your decisions. Developed by Ground Game Atelier, The Time I Have Left is set to release in 2024.

These are just a few of the exciting horror games that caught our attention at Gamescom. With a range of settings, gameplay styles, and unique features, there’s something for every horror fan to look forward to in the coming months and years.
