New Ulm – Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s dominated Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a Tomahawk Conference girls basketball game, securing a 76-52 victory at MVL High School.

Mathiowetz’s Impressive Performance

Morgan Mathiowetz proved to be the star of the game, contributing 34 points, along with five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Her remarkable performance played a crucial role in St. Mary’s victory.

Contributions from St. Mary’s Players

Aside from Mathiowetz, several other players made significant contributions to the team’s win. Brynne Ibberson scored 14 points and showcased her all-around skills with seven rebounds, two assists, and seven steals. Kylie Pelzel added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Olivia Schieffert contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Amelia Schwartz stood out defensively with 10 rebounds and two steals.

Merseth Leads MVL

Mackenzie Merseth led Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s efforts with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Avery Freier also made her mark with 10 points. Ella Hunter displayed her playmaking abilities with eight points and three assists. Olivia Hammer and Averyelle Hopp each contributed six points.

Coach Woitas Pleased with Team’s Performance

St. Mary’s head coach Bruce Woitas expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating, “Overall, we played well.” He was particularly pleased with the Knights’ impressive 49-point score in the first half.

Highlights from the Game

The first half witnessed Mathiowetz’s dominance as she scored on fast-break layups and three-point shots. The Knights showcased their offensive prowess, while also excelling defensively and rebounding effectively. MVL responded with a strong defensive showing in the second half and both teams employed a full-court press towards the end of the game.

MVL head coach Hailey Santos commented on her team’s determination to improve, stating, “We’ve just rolled with the punches. We’ve learned from our mistakes and taken advantage of every opportunity to get better as a team.
