Recognition for Ace Baldwin Jr.

Penn State men’s basketball senior Ace Baldwin Jr. has been named a preseason top 20 finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, according to an announcement by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

What is the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award?

The Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, named after Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guard in Division I men’s college basketball. The watch list of 20 candidates was determined by a national committee of college basketball personnel.

Ace Baldwin Jr.’s Impressive Career

Ace Baldwin Jr., originally from Baltimore, Maryland, is entering his first season at Penn State after transferring from VCU. He had an outstanding collegiate career at VCU, where he was a two-time all-conference pick and the 2023 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

During his time at VCU, Baldwin Jr. accumulated impressive statistics, including 829 points, 419 assists, and 183 steals. He averaged double-digit points in his sophomore and junior seasons and led the Rams in assists throughout his tenure at VCU. The team achieved a 68-25 record, made two NCAA Tournament appearances, and reached the NIT once during his three seasons.

Highlights of the 2022-23 Season

Last season, Baldwin Jr. excelled with an average of 12.7 points per game. He ranked 15th nationally in assists per game (5.8) and 19th in steals per game (2.23). He was a vital component of VCU’s defense, which ranked 15th nationally in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency metric.

Fan Voting and Award Selection

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds, starting on October 27. The watch list of 20 players will be narrowed down to 10 in late January and to 5 in late February. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Bob Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, and the winner will be chosen.

The winner of the 2024 Bob Cousy Award will be announced alongside the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five. The other awards being presented include the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), as well as the Women’s Starting Five.
