Thirty-six communication and political science students from the University of San Diego embarked on an exciting journey to Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan. The students eagerly arrived at the hotel, filled with energy despite the long fourteen-hour flight from San Diego.

This spring break trip served as a culmination of their learning from their Intercultural Communication and Politics and the Environment classes. Over the first half of the spring semester, they had been studying these subjects at the university.

Professor Emily Edmonds-Poli, the Director of the Chapman Family Foundation International Program, proposed this study abroad experience to enhance experiential learning and international education at USD. Edmonds-Poli mentioned that the students would gain a deeper appreciation for their academic learning by connecting it to real-life experiences.

Students had to go through a rigorous application process to be accepted into the program, which was made possible by the generous support of the Chapman Family Foundation. Lily Rand, a communication major, expressed her excitement about being able to explore Japanese culture firsthand and compare it to her experiences at USD.

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Noelle Norton, requested that the trip be filmed to showcase the students’ experiential learning. Michelle Kennedy, the filmmaker, eagerly documented their adventures and learning experiences each day.

The USD College of Arts and Sciences recently launched its inaugural Arts & Sciences Magazine, featuring exciting new programs, impactful stories, and inspiring spotlights on students, faculty, and alumni. Be sure to read the full article on page 10 of the Fall 2023 issue.
