New Tours Offered to Explore NC State’s Hallowed Places

Many members of the NC State community are unaware of the significance of the most important locations on campus. To address this, the university has recently unveiled its Hallowed Places initiative, identifying ten irreplaceable buildings, landscapes, and natural settings that hold great importance to the campus community.

As part of this initiative, tours are now being offered to groups of up to 25 people. Two faculty and staff-specific tours have been scheduled during Red and White Week. The first tour will take place on Wednesday, October 25th, at 5 p.m., and the second tour will be held on Friday, October 27th, at 4 p.m. Interested individuals can sign up for the tours here.

During these tours, participants will have the opportunity to learn about university folklore, hear stories about icons and legends, and gain important knowledge about the cherished grounds of North Carolina’s largest university. All tours will begin at the front steps of Holladay Hall, so participants are requested to gather 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.

Exploring the Rich History

The tour will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes and will cover various locations on the main campus. Participants will discover intriguing facts about familiar sites, including:

  • How many bricks were used in the construction of Holladay Hall?
  • The origin of the four faces adorning the Memorial Tower
  • The connection between Mary Yarbrough and her time at NC State
  • The NC State alum responsible for designing the Brickyard based on his global travels
  • The thickness of the paint in the Free Expression Tunnel
  • Why the wealthiest woman in 1942 contributed $100,000 to complete Reynolds Coliseum
  • The significance of the stone bridge on the Court of North Carolina

While visiting these locations, participants will also receive information about two other Hallowed Places, Lake Raleigh Woods and the College of Veterinary Medicine cow pastures. Additionally, the tour will unveil some secrets about the newest Hallowed Place, Centennial Campus’ Oval.

Supporting the Hallowed Places Initiative

For those interested, there are two giving opportunities available. The first is the newly established Hallowed Places Preservation Fund, which aims to maintain the current Hallowed Places. The second opportunity involves limited-edition wines, produced by Shelton Wineries in Dobson, North Carolina. The proceeds from these wines will support student scholarships. Thus far, two wines have been released, with another set to be unveiled in November.

Don’t miss the chance to explore NC State’s Hallowed Places and delve into the rich history of the university. Sign up for a tour and discover the hidden stories behind these iconic locations.
