The Fairmont Cardinals Secure a Road Victory against Martin County West

Fairmont Cardinals boys basketball team defeats Martin County West Mavericks 69-56

The Fairmont Cardinals boys basketball squad secured a 69-56 victory on the road against the Martin County West Mavericks on Monday night in Trimont. Senior guard Levi Pooley led the Cardinals with an impressive 21-point performance, shooting 7 of 8 from the field in the first half. Cardinals’ head coach Jared Thompson praised Pooley’s leadership and confident performance, stating, “Levi has been playing really well lately. He’s playing with a lot of confidence and the last couple of weeks he has really taken his game to that senior level.”

Strong Performance from Supporting Cast

Alongside Pooley, the Cardinals’ supporting cast contributed to the victory. Junior Oliver Tordsen had eight points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Logan Junkermeier added eight points. Junior forward Harmon Schrunk showcased an aggressive style throughout the game, finishing with 11 points, four boards, and two steals.

Effective Defense and Transition Play

The Cardinals implemented a press defense strategy to force turnovers and create opportunities for easy baskets in transition. They took a 43-37 lead into halftime and came out with a defensive mindset in the second half. Coach Thompson acknowledged the Mavericks’ ability to handle the pressure in the first half but credited his team for making adjustments during halftime to limit their opponents’ scoring opportunities.

Mavericks’ Efforts and Challenges

Despite their efforts, the Martin County West Mavericks struggled with their size disadvantage against the Cardinals. Junior guard Kale Larson had a strong first half, contributing 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Junior forward Jacob Wilmes finished the game with 19 points and seven boards.

Fairmont (5-10) will host St. Clair in their next game, while Martin County West (1-15) will travel to Nicollet.
