A new framework aims to guide the edtech industry in implementing AI in education in a purpose-driven, transparent, and equitable manner.

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) released “Principles for the Future of AI in Education” to help the edtech industry work alongside educators during AI-infused learning.

The seven principles are:

  1. AI technologies in education should address the needs of learners, educators, and families.
  2. AI technologies used in education should account for educational equity, inclusion, and civil rights.
  3. AI technologies used in education must protect student privacy and data.
  4. AI technologies used in education should strive for transparency.
  5. Companies building AI tools should engage with education institutions to explain the opportunities and risks of new AI technologies.
  6. Education technology companies and AI developers should adopt best practices for accountability and ethics.
  7. The education technology industry should support AI literacy for students and educators.

The principles were developed by the SIIA AI in Education Steering Committee and endorsed by industry leaders.

Sen. Mike Rounds and representatives from the U.S. Department of Education and Los Angeles Unified School District spoke at the event.
