Barbie Hirkala, a 28-year breast cancer survivor, shared a heartfelt moment with Loretta Lescallette, also a two-time cancer survivor, at Trinity Health System’s Faith Over Fear “Pop In” event held at Trinity Medical Center East.

Pampering and Breast Cancer Prevention Education

Trinity Health System organized its first Faith Over Fear “Pop In” event at Trinity Medical Center East, combining breast cancer prevention education with a morning of relaxation, treats, and prizes. The event, held to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, welcomed approximately 200 visitors to the lobby, which was adorned with pink-themed decorations.

Pampering Services and Informative Sessions

Visitors enjoyed a relaxed environment where they could receive free food, socialize, and explore various vendors offering information about breast cancer prevention and resources. The event also offered pampering services, including manicures provided by the Jefferson County Vocational School and hand, neck, and shoulder massages by a professional therapist.

Delicious Treats and Door Prizes

Guests sipped on non-alcoholic watermelon mimosas and enjoyed free doughnuts from So Nuts 4 Doughnuts. Additionally, the event featured various free items and a chance to win door prizes donated by local businesses and supporters of Trinity Health System.

Comfort, Information, and Support

Laurie Labishak, Trinity’s marketing director, emphasized the importance of women receiving annual mammograms for early detection, which can save lives. Labishak aimed to create a comfortable environment, showcasing Trinity’s mammography center to reassure women that the process is not as intimidating as it may seem.

Health Professionals Share Vital Information

Kayla Campos, patient navigator and mammographer at Trinity’s Images Center, provided valuable information about diagnostic mammograms, which are recommended for women starting at age 40. Campos explained that if a biopsy indicates a positive or high-risk result, Trinity collaborates with the Tony Teramana Cancer Center to schedule appropriate treatment.

Comprehensive Cancer Treatment

Marsha Lewis, patient advocate at the Teramana center, highlighted the range of treatments available at their facility, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. With physicians from Trinity, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Allegheny Health Network, patients receive comprehensive care.

Supporting Women’s Health in the Community

Sherie Dunlevy of IC Care, an in-home senior care service, commended Trinity’s efforts to support women in the community and promote women’s health. She encouraged other women to prioritize screenings and be proactive about their health.

Personal Testimonies and Motivation

Emilee Wood, a vendor representing Tupperware in the Country with Emilee, exemplified the importance of being proactive with her own appointment for a mammogram while participating in the event. Yvonne Tuchalski, a cancer survivor, emphasized the significance of early detection and shared her own experience with radiation therapy.

Special Attractions and Fundraising

Ann Marie McConaghy showcased her colorful 1978 Volkswagen bus, known as Smiley Ann’s Photo Van, where visitors could take memorable pictures. The event also raised awareness for the Trinity Foundation Women’s Imaging Fund through a dine-to-donate event at the Fort Steuben Mall’s Texas Roadhouse on October 23.
