Prime Minister Hun Manet Attends ASEAN-GCC Summit in Saudi Arabia

Hun Manet’s Successful Visit to China

Prime Minister Hun Manet recently departed from China after a successful visit to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing. During the visit, he signed several significant development agreements, marking Cambodia’s active participation in international politics.

Bilateral Meetings in Saudi Arabia

Accompanied by foreign minister Sok Chenda Sophea and other senior ministers and business leaders, Hun Manet is now in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to attend the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit on October 20. The aim of the summit is to explore ways to enhance cooperation in various sectors such as trade and investment, smart cities, energy, counter-terrorism, and tourism.

Hun Manet will engage in bilateral meetings with foreign dignitaries from the GCC member states, fostering closer cooperation between Cambodia and the GCC. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stated that this summit is crucial for both ASEAN and GCC leaders to strengthen mutually beneficial collaboration.

Expected Outcomes of the Summit

The ASEAN-GCC Summit is anticipated to adopt two major outcomes – a joint summit statement and the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation for the period 2024-2028. These agreements will further solidify the cooperation between ASEAN and the GCC member states.

Cambodia’s Growing Role in International Affairs

Yang Peou, the secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, praised Hun Manet’s participation in the summit as a way to raise Cambodia’s profile on the global stage. He believes that Cambodia’s active involvement in major international events will benefit the nation’s international relations, economy, and trade.

Peou emphasized the importance of Cambodia’s increased role in regional and international affairs, stating that it will contribute to the country’s continued growth and recognition on the global platform.

Strengthening Trade Relations

Hong Vannak, an economist at the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s International Relations Institute, highlighted the potential for deepening trade relations between Cambodia and Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter. He mentioned that the trade volume between the two countries has been steadily increasing, reaching approximately $26 million in 2021. Vannak sees Saudi Arabia as a considerable market for Cambodia and advocates for strengthening the relationship to boost exports, particularly agricultural products and travel goods.

The Riyadh summit provides an excellent opportunity for Cambodia to establish a stronger presence in the GCC region and explore new avenues for economic growth through increased trade and investment.
