Canfield Cardinals: A Season of Growth and Promise

It’s been an eventful season for the Canfield Cardinals hockey team, filled with both challenges and opportunities. With the addition of five talented freshmen to the roster, the team has experienced some growing pains. However, despite their recent 6-1 loss to Westlake, Coach Steve Covelli remains optimistic about the team’s future.

A Positive Approach

Coach Covelli emphasizes the importance of recognizing the team’s progress and staying positive. He believes in dissecting each game, using it as a learning opportunity, and providing constructive feedback during practice. Covelli has witnessed significant improvements in the team’s performance, such as more accurate passing, which indicates positive growth.

Growing Mentally and Physically

Covelli acknowledges that many opposing teams have older players, with some even reaching the age of 18. In contrast, the Cardinals have a younger roster with 14 and 15-year-olds. Despite this age difference, Covelli believes their mental and physical growth, coupled with ongoing progress, promise a bright future for Canfield Cardinals hockey.

Gavin Rupert’s Lone Goal

During the recent game against Westlake, Cardinals’ freshman forward Gavin Rupert scored the team’s only goal. Although the Demons secured two goals in the first period, the Cardinals showed great resilience. However, a challenging period in the second half allowed Westlake to score four quick goals, ultimately widening the deficit beyond recovery.

Short-lived Struggles

Coach Covelli reflects on the team’s struggles with maintaining momentum throughout the game. He notes that previous matches against Westlake revealed a similar pattern of conceding goals within a short timeframe. Despite outshooting and out-hitting their opponents, the Cardinals faced penalties and encountered a six-minute lapse that proved costly. Nevertheless, Covelli remains hopeful for the team’s future success.

Looking Ahead

Though currently standing at a 3-6 record for the season, the Cardinals anticipated a period of growth and development. The team understands the significance of future seasons and acknowledges the leadership potential in players like defenseman Luke Scolieri, despite only being a sophomore.

Ty Novotny’s Versatility

Freshman Ty Novotny initially joined the team as a defenseman but has transitioned to playing as a forward. This positional change has enhanced Novotny’s overall game and provided the team with added offensive capabilities. Novotny believes this adjustment will also benefit his future performance as a defenseman.

A Close-Knit Group

The Cardinals take pride in their strong bond as teammates, which contributes to their success on the ice. Without extensive communication, the players have developed a deep understanding of one another’s playing styles, resulting in a cohesive unit. Novotny expresses appreciation for the familiarity and camaraderie within the team.

Next Challenge: Normandy Invaders

The Cardinals will face the Normandy Invaders in their upcoming game on January 21st. With the season focused on growth and progress, the team is eager to continue their development and showcase their potential on the ice.
