How Electricity Is Changing Around the World

The demand for electricity is increasing globally, especially in rapidly-developing countries like China and India. While renewable energy sources like wind and solar power have grown, fossil fuels still fill the energy gap. This has led to a rise in carbon emissions, posing a threat to the environment. To combat climate change, experts believe that the world needs to rapidly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and transition to carbon-free sources. The upcoming global climate summit will focus on this crucial issue.

Falling Fossil Fuels

Power generation from fossil fuels has been declining in the United States, Europe, and even coal-reliant Australia. This decline is attributed to the rapid growth of renewable energy, including wind and solar power. The European Union generated 22% of its electricity from these sources last year, while the United States generated 15%, slightly above the global average. Improved energy efficiency and a shift away from heavy industries have also contributed to the decrease in fossil-fueled power.

Growth Through Coal

In contrast, rapidly growing economies like China still heavily rely on coal for power generation. However, China’s power sector is expected to reach a turning point soon, with the growth of carbon-free power surpassing coal-fired electricity. China’s commitment to reduce power-sector emissions and accelerate renewable energy deployment is a positive step, although the future decline of coal power remains uncertain. Other developing countries, such as India and Indonesia, also heavily depend on coal for economic development but are striving to increase their renewable energy capacity.

Despite challenges in financing and access to electricity, the rapid growth of solar and wind generation shows that the transition towards cleaner energy is underway and achievable.
