Winter Storm Brings Heavy Snowfall to Western New York

Snowfall Warning and Potential Road Hazards
The snow has returned for the season.
A lake effect snow warning remains in effect until Wednesday at 7 a.m. The National Weather Service in Buffalo projects that snow totals will range from 8 to 16 inches from Monday through Wednesday morning.
The heaviest snowfall was expected Monday night through today, with some areas receiving up to 2 inches an hour. “Untreated roads will become snow covered resulting in slick conditions for the afternoon commute,” the National Weather Service stated in a news alert. “Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this band of heavy snow. Anticipate rapid changes in visibility, snow covered and slick roads during the afternoon commute. The band of heavy snow will extend along the Lake Erie shoreline from Lackawanna to Dunkirk impacting Interstate 90 between exits 53 and 59.”
Some areas, like Jamestown, received only a dusting Monday while others saw a few inches of accumulation.
Caution Urged and Preparedness Advised
County Executive PJ Wendel encouraged residents to use caution. “As we brace for the imminent arrival of Lake Effect snow, I implore all residents to extend their respect towards our dedicated snowplow drivers,” he said. “Let us maintain a safe distance as they diligently work to clear the roads. By prioritizing everyone’s safety, we not only protect lives but also enable these unsung heroes to combat Mother Nature more efficiently. Together, let’s foster a spirit of cooperation and gratitude, ensuring swift road clearance while safeguarding our community.”
Noel Guttman, County Emergency Services director, recommended residents be prepared as well. “Plan ahead. If you’re planning on staying in, make sure you have the supplies you need,” he said.
Guttman said agencies are ready for this storm. “I’ve been in contact with National Grid. They’re holding crews to prepare in case weather affects the power grid. They’re getting ready, otherwise it’s mainly normal preparations,” he said.
Impact on Events and Services
The weather did impact some events already. On Monday, Cassadaga Valley canceled all of its afterschool activities. In Dunkirk, the city school district postponed its family and community advisory team meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday evening, due to travel issues for some of its guest presenters. The district has begun to form the team to partner with family members and encourage open, two-way dialogue to support student learning.
The Westfield Food Pantry will also be closed today.
Early Season Snowfall
This is the second time there’s been measurable snow this season. The overnight of Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, a few inches of snow fell in the Chautauqua Ridge area, including Mayville, Cassadaga and Sinclairville, while little snow accumulation occurred in Jamestown or Dunkirk.
