Israel-Hamas Conflict Contributes to Rise in Antisemitism and Islamophobia in Canada
The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has had a profound impact on the surge of antisemitism and Islamophobia in Canada, and this issue hits close to home for Government House Leader Karina Gould.
In an interview on The West Block, Mercedes Stephenson asked Gould how the global increase in antisemitism affects her personally, not just as a Member of Parliament or a cabinet minister, but as a Jewish woman.
Gould responded, “The first emotion I feel is an overwhelming sadness. Speaking with friends, colleagues, and people across the country, I realize that many Jewish individuals in Canada are extremely worried right now.”
“There is a deep sense of pain and anguish stemming from the situation in the Middle East. Regardless of whether you are Jewish or Muslim, Israeli or Palestinian, fear and anxiety are prevalent.”

“This is an incredibly alarming time for many individuals. Antisemitism and Islamophobia are both on the rise, and they are interconnected,” Gould explained.
She added, “People are experiencing immense pain. However, it is crucial for everyone to see their fellow Canadians, regardless of their background.”
Gould highlighted the government’s commitment to address the issue by allocating an additional $5 million to enhance the security infrastructure program for faith groups. This funding will support the installation of security cameras and alarm systems in places of worship and community centers.
“We must take these threats seriously to ensure that no one, God forbid, gets hurt or worse in Canada,” Gould warned. “The recent incidents in Montreal have made it clear that we need to prioritize the safety and security of the Jewish community and all communities across the country.”
