Support Local Bakeries for Delicious Holiday Treats

What would the holidays be without traditional baked goodies and seasonal favorites like yule logs, babka, cookies, and pies?

Many of us are drawn to the same neighborhood bakery year after year, where independent business owners can be counted on to deliver not just good service and delicious holiday treats but also an infusion of nostalgia for our childhoods, a pride in our heritage, and a spirit of celebration.

Indeed, a great bakery can be a cornerstone of a thriving community, as favorite recipes are preserved while new trends are tested and perhaps create new traditions.

But before you stock up on Christmas cookies, cakes, or other goodies, you may wonder how clean is that busy bakery and how well does it adhere to health and safety guidelines?

Now you can search an easy-to-read Delaware Online restaurant inspection database that shows recent reports from food establishments in all three counties, as well as violations. That includes bakeries.

The website also includes which establishments have received the most violations in the last 30 days. Visit data.delawareonline.com/restaurant-inspections.

The database is updated using information from the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services. That department oversees the inspection of more than 3,500 permitted Delaware food establishments that prepare and serve food to the public. Most are inspected twice per year, using the State of Delaware Food Code, a science-based regulation similar to the national model from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

If a problem is found, the manager is shown the correct procedure.

The Division of Public Health oversees the inspection of more than 3,500 permitted Delaware food establishments that prepare and serve food to the public.

In addition to food trucks, this includes restaurants, church kitchens, grocery stores, delis, concession stands, ice cream parlors, pizzerias, schools, hospitals, bakeries, fitness centers, hotels, golf clubs, and pretty much anywhere food is prepared.

The database is meant to be a tool for consumers to be informed, however, it is only one measurement of a food establishment’s operations and does not provide a full picture of any business’s overall standards or offerings.

If you have questions regarding a food inspection report, whether currently reported or for a prior reporting period, please contact the Office of Food Protection at 302-744-4546.
