As the leaves start to fall and the weather takes a turn, it becomes evident that things are slowing down in Waterton Lakes National Park. However, despite the decrease in visitors during the off-season, numerous businesses in the tiny Alberta mountain town are still reaping the benefits of a busy summer. The early arrival of southern traffic has made a positive impact on many establishments.

Welch’s Chocolate Shop, owned by Carol Robbins, has experienced a spectacular summer. Robbins attributes this success to the opening of Chief Mountain Border Crossing, a major route connecting Montana Glacier and the International Peace Park on the other side. She estimates that 80 to 90 percent of their visitors have been Americans, greatly contributing to the shop’s prosperity.

According to Parks Canada, Waterton has seen 25,000 more visitors from June to August compared to the previous year. In fact, this three-month period has recorded the highest average number of guests since 2017. The increase in visitation has also played a role in boosting bookings for Bayshore Inn Resort & Spa, owned by Shameer Suleman.

In the past, Suleman had to keep their rates low to attract customers while facing increasing operational costs. However, this year, he finally managed to stabilize the business. Suleman explains that they were able to raise their rates to cover the rising costs, which ultimately led to a stable financial situation for the resort.

As winter approaches, many businesses will be closing their doors. However, Christy Gustavison, the visitor experience manager for Waterton Lakes National Park, wants to dispel the misconception that Waterton shuts down completely. She assures the public that the park gates remain open year-round, and they are ready to welcome visitors 365 days a year.

Gustavison also highlights that during the colder months, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy in Waterton. Winter hiking and snow sports are popular among tourists, providing ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the park’s beauty and engage in thrilling winter adventures.

Overall, the surge in tourism during 2023 has greatly benefitted Waterton Lakes National Park and its surrounding businesses. Despite the upcoming winter closures, the park remains accessible and promises a wide range of activities to keep visitors entertained year-round.
