West Virginia Governor Appoints New Delegate for District 6 Seat

West Virginia Studies Teacher Jeff Stephens to Fill District 6 Delegate Seat

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice is expected to announce today that Jeff Stephens, a West Virginia studies teacher at Sherrard Middle School, has been appointed to the District 6 seat in the House of Delegates representing Marshall County. Stephens received the news from Justice’s chief of state Brian Abraham and immediately shared the exciting news with his second period class.

A New Republican Delegate

Jeff Stephens, a Republican, will take over the seat previously held by Charlie Reynolds, and he plans to run for election next year. Stephens expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and assured his students that he would only be temporarily leaving his teaching position for the 60-day regular legislative session.

Celebrating Teaching Success

Stephens, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, is an esteemed teacher who has been recognized for his exceptional work. He was honored with an honorary “Golden Horseshoe” last year and has produced 13 “Golden Horseshoe” winners from his classes. Additionally, Stephens and his fellow teacher, Dan Gatts, have coached four teams to win the state’s history bowl championship. Stephens also serves as Sherrard Middle School’s athletic director and has a strong background in coaching basketball and football.

Focus on Education and Infrastructure

As a teacher and a resident of Marshall County, Stephens is passionate about improving education and infrastructure in the state. He believes that mental health care opportunities for young children need to be expanded, and he recognizes the importance of road projects and maintaining the state’s roads.

Controversy Surrounding the Appointment

Stephens’ appointment caused some controversy within the Marshall County Republican Executive Committee. Committee members were not informed of the decision beforehand, leading to resignations and dissatisfaction among certain members. Party Chairwoman Elgine McArdle explained that it is not the protocol for the governor to contact the county committee when making an appointment, and she emphasized the need to calm tensions and refocus on the work ahead.
