New Battery Cell Research and Development Center to be Established in Ohio State University

The Ohio State University has announced plans to establish a new battery cell research and development center. The 25,000-square foot facility, a partnership between the university, American Honda Motor Co., Schaeffler Americas, and JobsOhio officials, aims to accelerate domestic production of battery cell materials and manufacturing technologies.

Private-Public Collaboration

The project, set to open in April 2025, has received commitments totaling $22 million to date. The Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR) at Ohio State will manage and operate the center, which will serve as a hub for academic and industry connections across various disciplines. The center aims to attract electric vehicle battery manufacturing and supply chain businesses, supporting the growth of the industry.

Partnership with Honda

Honda will act as the lead foundational partner for the project, providing $15 million in funding for the research and development center. The facility will also serve as a resource for training the next-generation workforce in advanced manufacturing technologies. Honda aims to advance its commitment to an electrified future for automobiles, motorcycles, and power products globally.

Support from Officials and Leaders

Various officials and leaders have expressed their support for the project. Peter Mohler, acting president and executive vice president for research, innovation, and knowledge at Ohio State, emphasized the importance of collaboration with industry partners like Honda and Schaeffler. Ryan Augsburger, President of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, highlighted the positive impact on Ohio’s economy and workforce development. Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown also praised the project’s potential to drive automotive and sustainability advancements in Ohio.

Federal Funding and Future Prospects

Federal funding will support the construction of a 4,000-square-foot dry room, crucial for the assembly of battery cells due to their moisture sensitivity. The establishment of the battery cell research and development center reinforces Ohio’s position as a center for automobile innovation. It aligns with the state’s aim to lead in electric vehicle, aerospace, and electronics industries.
