Introduction

Alpena Civic Theatre continues to thrill audiences with their spooky production of “Blithe Spirit” running Thursday through Sunday. This British comedy by Noel Coward offers surprises, laughs, and an exceptional cast.

The Plot

“Blithe Spirit” revolves around writer Charles Condomine, who invites a quirky medium to his home with the intention of conjuring up spirits for his next book. However, chaos ensues when his late wife Elvira pays him a postmortem visit, visible only to Charles. This causes trouble with his current wife Ruth and involves their friends Dr. and Mrs. Bradman. The eccentric medium, Madam Arcati, attempts to mitigate the situation but her methods seem more outlandish than effective. Adding to the hilarity, house servant Edith provides physical comedy each time she enters the room, seemingly unaware of social norms.

The Talented Cast

The production showcases a stellar cast, with all actors delivering outstanding performances. Mitchell Stevenson portrays Charles Condomine, displaying his character’s intelligence and wit alongside experienced actor Kirstine Furtaw, who plays Ruth, engaging in spirited intellectual exchanges. Traci Boyle captures hearts as Edith, skillfully balancing comedy and endearment. With grace and poise, Isabel Luther portrays Violet, Dr. Bradman’s wife, and adds a touch of sweetness to the stage. Kristin Loughery shines as Elvira, Charles’ haunting late wife, delivering a performance that may leave the audience with chills. Andrew MacNeill grounds the play as Dr. Bradman, injecting skepticism and camaraderie. Carol Rundell steals the show as the eccentric Madam Arcati, with her hilarious portrayal leaving the audience in stitches.

Praise for the Production

The triumph of this production would not be possible without the commendable work of Director Lucas Moquin, Assistant Director Bill Powell, and the entire cast and crew. The set and costumes, meticulously designed and handled, add essential elements to the play’s atmosphere. Alpena Civic Theatre offers a treasured production that shouldn’t be missed.
