British Columbia to Make Holocaust Education Mandatory for High School Students
The province of British Columbia has announced plans to introduce mandatory Holocaust education for high school students. The curriculum changes, set to take effect in 2025, will ensure that students in Grade 10 learn about the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. Premier David Eby spoke about the rise in antisemitism in the province, citing recent incidents such as death threats against Jewish women and the vandalism of a rabbi’s home with a Nazi swastika. Eby emphasized the importance of learning from the past and preventing the repetition of such horrors.
New Curriculum to Reflect Lived Experiences
The government of British Columbia intends to work closely with the Jewish community and Holocaust survivors to develop the content and approach of the curriculum. The voices of survivors will be considered invaluable in shaping the education program. Additionally, the curriculum will also cover discriminatory policies, injustices in Canada, and other historical events to provide a broader understanding of social justice and equality.
Consultation Process and Inclusive History
The changes to the Grade 10 social studies curriculum will undergo a consultation process involving the Jewish community, education partners, and the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. The aim is to ensure that the curriculum reflects the diversity and history of British Columbia accurately. Topics such as the destruction of Hogan’s Alley, Japanese internment, and discrimination faced by various culturally diverse groups, including Muslim, East Asian, Black, and South Asian communities, will be considered for inclusion.
