Loneliness Epidemic: Addressing Social Isolation for Individuals with Disabilities

“There’s just an epidemic of loneliness,” says Karyn Harvey, a psychologist specializing in intellectual and developmental disabilities. Harvey is one of the speakers at this year’s Prairie Sexuality and Disability Conference held at the Brick Loft in Saskatoon.

The conference aims to shed light on various aspects of relationships, including sexuality, friendship, connection, and education. Harvey emphasizes that these are fundamental human rights that have been denied to many individuals with intellectual disabilities for years.

Hosted by Inclusion Saskatchewan, the conference acknowledges that people with intellectual disabilities are often excluded from conversations about sexual health, leading to unfavorable outcomes such as STIs, unplanned pregnancies, and sexualized violence.

Seeking Inclusion and Integration

Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Justice reveal that individuals with intellectual disabilities are seven times more likely to experience sexual abuse. Harvey, who has spent 35 years in the field, notes that these individuals often face social isolation and exclusion.

Although significant progress has been made in moving away from institutionalizing people with disabilities, many still face barriers that prevent them from being fully integrated into their communities.

The Need for Education and Awareness

According to Aiden Young, an advocate at the conference, education is essential in preventing the exploitation of individuals with disabilities. Young emphasizes the importance of spreading information and promoting understanding.

The conference provides a platform for individuals to interact with those who have lived experiences, fostering empathy and knowledge exchange.

Tackling the Loneliness Crisis

The loneliness epidemic among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities requires urgent attention. Lack of education and awareness contribute to their vulnerability, making them susceptible to abuse and exploitation.

Efforts like the Prairie Sexuality and Disability Conference play a crucial role in addressing this crisis and advocating for the inclusion and integration of individuals with disabilities.
