Despite the departure of Tom Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are proving themselves as the team to beat in the NFC South. After spending time with the team during their minicamp in May, I initially believed they had the potential to win the division. However, my perception changed during training camp in July. Mayfield was in a quarterback competition, which seemed to affect his performance. As a result, I picked the New Orleans Saints to win the division before the season began.
But now, a month into the season, the Bucs have taken the lead in the NFC South. They secured an impressive road victory against the Saints on Sunday, boosting their record to 3-1. Todd Bowles has done an excellent job coaching the team, and Mayfield’s standout performance against the Saints was a significant factor in their success. He threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, bouncing back from a mediocre showing against the Eagles.
The Buccaneers’ defense has also played a crucial role in their strong start. They rank seventh in points allowed, have the second-highest average number of takeaways per game, and are tied for 10th in sacks per game. Bowles’ defensive expertise is shining through, while offensive coordinator Dave Canales has also impressed with his work.
Looking ahead, the Bucs have a favorable schedule, including a home game against the Detroit Lions and a game against the Falcons. With their current momentum, a 5-1 start is definitely within reach.
