Retail Chain Calls for Accountability Amidst Disturbing Shoplifting Violence in B.C.

A retail chain in western Canada is calling for action and justice in response to what it describes as a significant increase in crime. London Drugs, a pharmacy chain with 79 stores in western Canada, including 52 in British Columbia, has seen a 500% increase in retail violence over the past four years. As a result, the company has had to spend an extra $1.5 million on security at its Vancouver stores compared to two years ago.

Tony Hunt, the loss prevention general manager at London Drugs, stated in an interview with Global News that they have witnessed a rise in random violence, threats, racism, and abuse towards customers and staff. In an effort to combat the issue, the company participated in a Vancouver police shoplifting crackdown in February and March. However, of the 278 charges recommended to Crown counsel by the police, over half (56%) were not approved.

Hunt expressed frustration with the lack of action taken after solid cases were presented to the courts. He questioned whether the Crown counsel’s perception of what is in the public interest aligns with that of London Drug’s customers and employees. Hunt believes that the government should address the shortcomings of the justice system in serving the people of British Columbia.

During the shoplifting crackdown, 47 repeat offenders were among the 217 arrests made. Hunt believes that people should be able to go to work without fearing random acts of violence. He emphasized the importance of a justice system that can effectively respond to situations where innocent people are being harmed.

B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma declined an interview request, stating that the Attorney General operates independently from the courts and that the BC Prosecution Service makes prosecutorial decisions independently as well.

London Drugs is urging for leadership and action to ensure the safety of its customers and employees. The retail chain emphasized the necessity of a justice system that can effectively address the crimes committed against innocent individuals.
